Introducing #227 - Alexis Kings
Let us introduce you to Alexis Kings - who has just released their soulful new single ‘Sundaze’. Ticking boxes for fans of Silk Sonic and Easy Life.
‘Sundaze’ encapsulates that hazy Sunday vibe with euphoric choruses and a hint of sunny brass, that showcase the band’s rhythmic groove and penchant for melodies that’ll get you moving. A perfect combination of chart-worthy Pop and funk-ridden, soulful sounds, it’s impossible to come away from ‘Sundaze’ without falling in love with Alexis Kings.
They took a moment to talk to us about their music.
Hey there Alexis Kings - how are you? So your new track ‘Sundaze’ is out now, can you tell us what it is about?
The song is about people being locked away in the pandemic away from the opposite sex & essentially lusting and day dreaming about it. The lyrics tell a story of a guy sitting in a smoky room and scripts his thoughts. We all went through the same thing so we think many people will relate.
Where was it recorded? Any behind the scenes stories from the creative process you are happy to share with us?
We recorded Sundaze with Brett Shaw at his studio in Peckham. We came to Brett with a handful of demo’s and outlined how we wanted them to sound and we vibed straight away. We were staying in these ropey apartments down the road during our time there which we’re pretty sure was being used as a brothel. That was quite an experience. There was a guy who would wander the streets outside and kept trying to break into the apartments and was shitting in the hallway. We decided to name him Jeff.
Where are you based? What are your favorite things to do there? Where do you go for music adventures?
Fabio lives in East London and Brendan is up in St Albans. London has one of the best music scenes in the world so we’re never short of great live music to go see and its right on our doorstep which couldn’t be better.
What are your key influences as a band?
(Fabio) Heavily inspired by bands like Tame Impala, Deftones, Foals and more recently have gotten into electronic music. The massive sounds some of these EDM guys get from their synths and the colours they paint are really inspiring to me. Movie soundtracks have also always been a massive focal point and how they transition between scenes and evoke different emotions just by audio is crazy to me. I try to apply this to our music.
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never listened to your music before?
A culmination of everything I’ve grown up listening to. Taking the best parts from all genres and chucking them into a big melting pot.
Now the track is out there - what next for you?
We have a load more material that we’ve recorded with Brett which will be coming out over the rest of this year. Some really exciting and experimental stuff in there. Also a tour later this year.
