Introducing #231: Femegades
If Bikini Kill and The Clash had a lovechild raised by Courtney Love, chances are Femegades would be that kid. Having earned an honorary Riot GRRRL badge with their debut EP Pornsick, the latest EP offering, Not All Men, picks up right where they left off. We caught up with the band to find out a bit more about them.
Hey Femegades - how are you? So you've just released your latest single -
how does it feel to have it out there in the world?
Hey, great thanks for asking. Yes! We’ve just released our first single off our upcoming EP ‘Not All Men’.
Excited for everyone to have a taste of our sound on this EP and for the listeners to immerse themselves in the theme behind Speechless
It is called ‘Speechless’. Can you tell us what it's about?
The song challenges whether anyone hiding behind the phrase ‘Not All Men’ is really as squeaky clean as it seems.
It comes at a time when speaking out about women's rights is more important
than ever. How important is it for bands to use their platform for such means,
and do you think more bands should be doing so?
To me, how important it is feels like personal taste. Music needs to sound good first and foremost to be of any interest, right?
But so much has already been done before, I do find myself more and more disinterested by bands that don't have anything new or interesting to say
in their songs.
You guys are from London. What are your favourite things to do there? Where do you go for adventures?
Chessington.
What are the key influences in your music?
I think we all grew up listening to a lot of 90s music one way or another. So Bikini Kill, Nirvana, Veruca Salt, L7, Elastica all spring to mind.
Just too many to list really. Have to say we're on a bit of a Tool kick at the moment after the recent o2 shows.
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never listened to your
music before?
A bit of punk, grunge and I would say some alternative vibes in them. We tend to float between those sounds, hopefully it all sounds like us at the end of the day.
