Introducing #232: Egotist

Manchester based alt pop outfit Egotist exhibit raw emotion through heart wrenching narratives and powerful melodies. Expect soaring choruses and stark piano ballads with confessional lyrics that dance between physical longing and emotional disintegration set to the devil’s heartbeat. We caught up with them to find out more.

Hey Egotist - how are you? So your new track ‘God’ is out now - can you tell us what the song is  about?

I find that my mind tends to flip extremely between optimism and pessimism. God represents that  intense inner conflict by describing an experience I had in the early hours of the morning one Tuesday  when I allowed myself to immerse in the cynicism; most of me overtaken by a depression but part of  me hopeful that I could convince myself I am fine… I wasn’t

It’s the first taste of material from you guys, what can we expect from future release?

Everything we do is fuelled by Emotion, we want to make people really feel something. You can  expect soaring choruses and stark piano ballads with confessional lyrics and powerful melodies  dipped in disintegration.

You’re from Manchester, what are your favourite things to do there?

Manchester is a magnificent city. It has an incredible underground music scene that we allowed us all  to cut our teeth so we often go to gigs and support other local artists. There is also an array of charity  and vintage shops that we spend a lot of time in; we’re big on sustainable living and who doesn’t love  Levi’s for a tenner?

What are the key influences when it comes to your music?

Our collective music taste is quite varied. At the moment we are really into FKA Twigs and Bon Iver;  both of whom have definitely made an impression on our latest material. We’d also say Nick Cave  and The Bad Seeds, Elena Tonra and Leonard Cohen have been very important to us as songwriters.

How would you describe your sound to someone who has never listened to your music before?
