Architects - 'Tear Gas'
Ahead of the release of their forthcoming album, Architects drop their new single ‘tear gas’, a thunderous slice of metalcore at its sharpest.
Fresh off their number one album For Those That Wish to Exist Architects are no strangers to the scene. Through multiple line-up changes and direction shifts, to still be going strong ten albums in is a feat all in itself. What is even more impressive is the consistency in quality architects have demonstrated themselves capable of.
The first single ‘when we were young’ from their upcoming tenth album ‘the classic symptoms of a broken spirit’ strikes you with its thrash-style riff before immersing you in its blissfully satisfying chorus. It’ll come to no surprise to anyone who’s heard it, their latest single ‘tear gas’ doesn’t disappoint.
Sailing on the brilliantly crafted riff, you’re treated to a cathartic mix of Nine Inch Nail-style synth arpeggios and a classic drum sound that could fill a stadium. There’s a particularly genuine drama here, with just enough nuance in it’s production to add interest without detraction. Lead singer Sam Carter’s gravelly vocal style shares some similarities with Chester Bennington of Linkin Park, balancing angst, authority and clarity. In fact, it’s definitely more on the nu-metal side of the metalcore spectrum, which is of no detriment in this reviewers opinion.
‘tear gas’ comes packed with a well-produced sci-fi disaster music video; tongue firmly in its cheek. Not dissimilar in tone to compatriots of the metalcore genre Don Broco (who themselves have had even greater style changes before their current critical acclaim), the video is humorous, charming and lighthearted. Proving once and for all that just because a song is heavy, doesn’t mean it can’t be fun. Architects are on tour supporting Biffy Clyro in November, after the release of their tenth studio album this October. What a year to be a metalcore fan!
