Gilla Band - 'Eight Fivers'
Back with their first single in nearly four years and performing under a new moniker, Gilla Band announce themselves with their rip-roaring new single ‘Eight Fivers’.
Revered by many as one of the most innovation bands of a generation, the return of Gilla Band has been met with a wave of excitement and a palpable sense of anticipation within the music industry. Almost four years since the release of 'The Talkies' the band are back with a brand new single and an announcement of a new record that is set for release later this year on Rough Trade Records.
"Eight Fivers" is the first track released under the band's new moniker and it announces itself with the same blaring avant-garde punk energy that initially thrust them into the spotlight back in 2015 following the release of their debut album "Holding Hands With Jaime".
On "Eight Fivers" the distinctive drawl of lead singer, Dara Kiely's vocals laid over a simple drum beat gives the track an ominous, brooding opening. However, in vintage Gilla Band style, the track soon descends into a roaring, driving frenzy. Kiely's ambiguous vocal delivery creates a deep feeling of dissonance that is reflected in the track's lyrical content. Discussing the first single from their new album, Kiely explains “Eight Fivers is about 40 quid. It's about being out of touch with modern circumstances while feeling socially limited. Never fitting in and kind of proud of it. Stuck with what I have and happy for it. Being grateful and not fashionable, self-conscious and too aware of what is lacking. Accepting that jealousy played a big role in my life but trying not to feed into it".
Despite the new name, some things never change. The new single from Gilla Band proves that the band have still got it and still sit at the cutting edge of the alternative music scene. Their new album "Most Normal" is set for release on 7th October and their new single "Eight Fivers" is out now.
