Julien Chang - 'Marmalade'
Baltimore’s Julien Chang writes music that tunnels toward a series of deeper truths, investigating everyday existentialism, love and life, art and the artist. He recently released his latest single ‘Maramalade’.
Julien Chang offers another dreamy tune with new single “Marmalade.” The video promises a glimpse into the past with him holding up his own reflection in a rear-view car window, and as Chang describes “The verses are the positive struggle of trying to make sense of a past romantic experience; the choruses are the ensuing confrontation with non-sense.” This is further captured by the montage of snapshots working the same way memories of old relationships often come back to oneself, in uninvited fragmentation.
Considering his impressive 2019 album Jules, it is no doubt “Marmalade” is continuing to allow Chang to construct a signature sound of his own. This uniqueness can be attributed to his background in classical music in combination with a wide variety of inspirations, naturally including psychedelic rock, creating an impressive cross of genre that does not allow him to be tied down to any one specific niche of indie pop. Every one of his songs takes the listener on a unique trip, and “Marmalade” is no exception. The delicate outro repeating “I remember falling in love” makes this particular journey end on a note of acceptance—letting these memories come and go in waves (as notably featured in the video). The peppy and unbothered beat with the reverberating guitar and vocals offer a celestial window into what is coming on November 4th with Chang’s upcoming album The Sale.
