Album Review: Sick Joy - 'WE’RE ALL GONNA F***KING DIE'
Overcoming rough times in life; Sick Joy’s debut album ‘WE’RE ALL GONNA F***KING DIE’ captures the universal experiences of being human perfectly.
Sick Joy are set to release their debut album ‘WE’RE ALL GONNA F***KING DIE’ on July 8th. The band kicks their debut album off to a strong start with the track ‘don’t feel like dying.’ Mykl explained that “I remember after a period of having a rough time, I literally woke up feeling an unexpected calm. Even if it disappeared, I was really appreciative of that moment.”
‘Don’t feel like dying’ is a track that essentially captures the struggles life throws our way, often when we are least expecting, and the ability we have to overcome and grow from these challenging moments.
The track ‘stay numb’ has a more upbeat melody, and Mykl revealed that “it’s about an old girlfriend, who’s actually one of my best friends now.” It’s refreshing to hear a band create a track about an ex-girlfriend where there is no animosity harboured towards her, when so often we find ourselves listening to songs about relationships that have ended that usually paint an artist’s ex in a negative light.
The eighth track of ‘WE’RE ALL GONNA F***KING DIE’ is called ‘rich hippies’ and it distinctly feels like a track that would not be out of place on a summer road trip playlist. It’s easy to picture yourself listening to this song in the car, either by yourself or with your friends or loved ones, while you’re on the way to go and make some new memories for yourself.
Sick Joy closes the album with ‘ultimately.’ The track begins more subdued than others on the album but lends itself to creating what may possibly be a perfect closing track for an album that focuses on overcoming different life challenges. ‘Ultimately’ feels reassuring and almost like a promise from the band that you can get through whatever you’re going through, and that you’re much stronger than you give yourself credit for.
While we are only half-way through the year, 2022 looks like it is set to be an incredibly exciting year for Sick Joy. Not only are SickJoy releasing their debut album on July 8th, but they will also be supporting Pearl Jam at Hyde Park, London the very same day and July 9th sees them playing 2000 Trees Festival in Cheltenham.
Sick Joy are definitely ones to watch this year and it is exciting to think about what they are going to bring to the table next!
