Introducing #257 - JERUB

Let us introduce you to Elevate Music’s latest signing - Nottingham singer-songwriter JERUB, who along with the announcement of his forthcoming EP - has just released his latest single ‘Cold’.

A finalist in 2021’s BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge Introducing talent search - standing out from over 10,000 entries - JERUB released his debut EP 'Feel It' in December 2021 and has continued to make an impact with his beautifully pensive style. Most recently, his soothing sound saw him featured on the official soundtrack of Amazon Prime’s Christmas movie ‘Your Christmas or Mine?’ which also includes tracks from Maisie Peters, Laura Mvula, Sam Ryder and more.

He took a moment to talk to us about his music.

Hey there JERUB - how are you? So your track ‘Cold’ is out now - can you tell us what it is about?
Hey! I’m doing really well thank you. Hope you’re good also! I guess recently, I’ve been reflecting on the fact that as I’ve gotten older and life has changed a little bit, so have the relationships around me. I feel like relationships go through seasons. There’s summer where it’s all warm, exciting and good vibes but there’s also winter where it gets a bit cold and it’s hard. I guess the song reflects on how difficult relationships can cause you to put up walls and become cold.

Where are you from and what are your favourite things to do there?
Well I’m from two places. I was born in Nigeria and spent the first 10 years of my life there but was raised in Nottingham. I love both places, in Nigeria I love hanging out with the fam and seeing everyone, in Nottingham, I enjoy putting some headphones on, listening to music and browsing around the different charity shops in the city.

What are the key influences when it comes to your music?
I’ve  grew up listening to a mix of gospel music, soul, singer-songwriter and pop. My influences range from Kirk Franklin to Otis Redding, Ed Sheeran to Jon Bellion

How would you describe your sound to someone who has never listened to your music before?
Powerful vocals, anthem choruses and honest lyrics. Music that invokes feeling.

Now the track is out there - what's next for you?
I’ve got a lot of new music set to come out this year and I’m really excited to share it along with playing a bunch of live shows! Really excited, stay tuned.
