In Conversation With #240 - Drew Sycamore
One of Denmark’s biggest pop assets, Drew Sycamore - has just released her new album ‘Superfaith’ via Warner Music.
Superfaith sees Drew Sycamore venture into more Kylie Minogue-esque, over-the-top and energetic soundscapes boosted by infectious synths, groovy 808s. Kept tight by minimalistic hooky choruses inspired by late ‘90s R&B, the album sees her gaze outwards rather than inwards as she adopts a carefree attitude in response to a tumultuous few years for both herself and the world around her. Lyrically, Drew plays around with religious concepts as a rebellion against the patriarchy of the church, inspiring the album’s title.
She took a moment to talk to us about how the album came together.
Hey there Drew Sycamore - how are you? So your album is out now - how does it feel to have it out there in the world?
It feels like I’ve had a lengthy and brutal massage by a strong masseuse. Good, in other words. The process of finishing an album is sometimes like a deep dive and you hold your breath for a really long time. Very satisfying. And I can move on creatively as well.
It is called ‘Superfaith’ - what is the meaning behind that?
I take manifesting and my intuition veeery seriously. And I wanted to just make an album that had 100% good vibe and no self-deprecating lyrics. Only an upward spiral. I have superfaith in my potential. I’m religious about fulfilling my destiny. Desire and belief are extremely powerful energies.
Where was it recorded? Any behind the scenes stories from the creative process you are happy to share with us?
It’s all recorded in Copenhagen mostly in the early spring of 2022. Honestly there are not enough pages to tell even half of it. We had a lot of fun and we’re a close group and all friends. Almost all songs have had very inappropriate work titles and I have cried with laughter because we had such a good time doing it. We actually made 11 songs for the album but I ended up cutting it down because I wanted it to be super tight and short with bangers all the way through. And Bowie had 8 songs on his ‘Let’s Dance’ record.
What are the key themes and influences on the album?
I’ve been channelling all my heroes Kylie, Mariah, Janet and Gaga big time. It’s impossible to not hear all the stuff I’ve listened to growing up. And I’m not scared of it either. I love that I can hear my own history and I have been able to travel back to my teenage self and be immensely excited about doing the music I’d always dreamt of doing.
Do you have a favorite lyric on the album - if so, which one and why?
‘It’s not how bad it gets but how good it feels’ from ‘Fever’
I guess it’s just a line that I find so potent. It’s saying a lot in a few words, you know. Don’t worry about the future just feel the joy you’re in now. It’s a very simple rule of life.
Now the album is out there - what next?
I’m actually already working on new stuff. Haha. I’m a Pokémon and I’m ready for my next level. I'm the rocket emoji! I’m touring a lot this year and will be coming to the Electric in Brixton on my European tour with Lukas Graham. I’m also gonna dye my hair. Maybe even more than once. And enjoy myself as much as I possibly can. Take over the world. Buy diamonds. Et Cetera.
