waterbaby - 'Airforce Blue'
Stockholm-based artist waterbaby releases her sharp and glamorous debut single Airforce Blue on Sub Pop Worldwide.
waterbaby is just getting started. Airforce Blue is a dazzling track, keeping the listeners drawn in with her creatively autotuned main vocal. Though the track is upbeat and hopeful, the chorus repeats “I still miss you.”
A soft bassline and non-intrusive drums drive us on and swirling guitars complement the insightful lyrics. The track reminds us of the catastrophic and devastating feeling of having a crush…known all too well to us all.
In the track, waterbaby admits “You were bad for me and I for you” and the backing vocals agree with “I remember yes I do” expressing those up and down feelings of an unreciprocated crush and all the ridiculous longing thoughts that trespass your mind at the time. The playful yet wholehearted outlook of this song introduces us to waterbaby and how she deals with her crushes and the ever-confusing subject of love.
Her choir-school history is prevalent in her vocals and her understanding of complex melodies which makes the track feel fresh. This fresh feel with its warm captivating tones takes us to the deep blue lakes, ponds and streams of Sweden in spring, it’s bubbly, warm and fresh.
The music video to Airforce Blue is well worth a watch directed by waterbaby’s main collaborator Marcus White. This song was created in Stockholm with White and Anton Fernandez. The genius idea of setting off fireworks on New Year's Eve along with the rest of Stockholm gives a bright and extravagant visual backdrop to waterbaby and this song.
waterbaby is now officially signed to Sub Pop worldwide and with a powerful debut single in Airforce Blue, I’m sure we are set to hear more captivating tracks from waterbaby in 2023.
