Album Review: COVET - 'catharsis'

COVET capture what it means to fall in love with being human, and experiment with using music to transport us to times where we felt our happiest.

April 7th sees San Francisco trio Yvette Young (guitars, vocals), Brandon Dove (bass), and Jessica Burdeaux (drums) who are known as COVET, releasing their album ‘catharsis.’

“We did a lot of risk-taking on this album,” states Yvette. “I try to follow what excites me without heeding anybody’s expectations. I’m leaning into melodies, tones and textures and trying to use them to transport listeners.” The idea of different art forms being able to transport us to different places is one that has perhaps existed since the birth of those art forms themselves and experimenting with the ways in which music can transport listeners can be observed through decades and centuries of music – but it is refreshing to see new ways of doing so being born.

‘Coronal’ opens the album, and the track feels hazy and dream-like with the echoing of vocals over a fuzzy melody. It feels like it wouldn’t be out of place in the soundtrack of a coming-of-age movie. “In a micro and macro-sense, music, video games, and technology are vessels for escapism,” Yvette muses, and it’s hard to argue with that – people use music to forget the real world and its problems for a moment, in order to just breathe and relax.

“Firebird” was the first single of the album and Yvette explained that “it’s about embracing joy,” and this is something that translates so easily and beautifully with the light-hearted melody throughout the duration of the song.

COVET bring their newest release to a close with the track ‘lovespell’ and Yvette revealed that “’lovespell’ is the feeling I get when I write.” Expanding on that, she explained “It’s the closest sensation to falling in love. Since this is a good vibe tune, we thought it would be fun to have saxophone too. We didn’t want to leave anyone on a negative note. I hope by the end of this song your heart feels like it is exploding with love.” ‘Lovespell’ feels like the moment you fell in love with your passion or favourite activity, it feels like being a child again and playing in the ocean, most importantly it feels like being human and falling in love with what makes you a person.

It’s exciting to see what COVET come out with next, and to see what new worlds they create through their music. If one thing is for certain though, whatever comes next for them is going to be just as impressive as ‘catharsis’ and will be sure to move their listeners once again.
