Deeper - 'Sub'
Chicago misfits Deeper celebrate signing to Sub-Pop with their brilliant new single ‘Sub’.
Following the success of their 2020 sophomore record Auto Pain, indie-rock quartet Deeper became a hot topic. VICE included it in their 100 Best Albums of the Year list, BBC Radio 6 Music bestowed it with the prestigious honour of Album of the Day and Paste Magazine called it “one of the best indie records of 2020.”
Inspired by their former band member Mike Clawson who took his own life, they tackled mental health head on with the brutal imagery of ‘Lake Song’ and the punky dissonance of ‘4U’. Jarring and beautiful, Auto Pain was the sound of a band healing and dealing with grief on their own terms.
Their upbeat new single ‘Sub’ returns with a revitalised energy as they look to their bright future while gazing into the distant past. The music video zips through endless doors and television screens featuring callbacks to their previous videos whether it be a balaclava-clad thief or a PPE-covered hazmat man.
Shockingly this new addition to their discography was nearly left on the cutting room floor, the band commented on the release saying “We recorded it in 2021 at a slower tempo before realizing it didn’t work. It was built again from the ground up, this time with a much faster tempo and different dynamics. The nice thing about iterating on songs over the pandemic was having time to revisit old ideas – the song even features a guitar part from the first recorded Deeper song that we ended up discarding.”
With a 15-date US tour starting in May, a slot at the Pitchfork Music Festival and a new ally in record label Sub-Pop while they hone their upcoming third album, the post-punk foursome are on the right side of an exciting breakthrough. The unpolished ‘Sub’ delivers the playful experimental rock that Deeper nurture so well.
