Ignoring traditional genre boundaries with their distinctive sound, As Everything Unfolds aspire to create a unique listening experience, combining a multitude of influences from within the alternative realm and beyond. Following the staggering success of their 2021 debut album Within Each Lies The Other, As Everything Unfolds earned festival slots across the UK and Europe including Download Festival, Graspop and Rock For People, as well as a nomination for Best British Newcomer at the Heavy Music Awards.
They took a moment to talk to us in more depth about how the album came together.
Hey there As Everything Unfolds - how are you? So your album is out now - how does it feel to have it out there in the world?
We’re great! It feels amazing to finally have it out there, we’ve been working on this album since around the release of our debut album Within Each Lies The Other. We have been sitting on it for a long time and wanted to make sure everything was perfect before we released it, and two years after Within Lies The Other, it’s now out!
It is called ‘Ultraviolet’ - what is the meaning behind that?
Photographic darkroom practice is something that has been a large part of my creative path, finding links between the emotion in music, putting everything on display for all to listen and exposing a colour photograph, putting it on display for all to see. Only when you are exposed to Ultraviolet light can you see life in full colour.
Where was it recorded? Any behind the scenes stories from the creative process you are happy to share with us?
We recorded it at Hidden Track Studios with Oz Craggs. We spent 2 weeks living in an air B&B in Folkstone which was pretty uneventful apart from having to come up with and cook meals every night, we would take it in turns to cook for the group, then in the evening we would attempt to watch Metallica’s ‘some kind of monster’ but every time I fell asleep we would have to restart it the evening after… After 3 attempts though we gave up! After we recorded it we sent it off to the USA to be mixed by Taylor Larson.
What are the key themes and influences on the album?
I think really it was the positive aspects that came from the first album that inspired the second, and the opportunities we were given last year. That reality tied in with the metaphorical concept ended up creating a really interesting palette mix for me to work on lyrically.
If the album could be the soundtrack to any film - which one would it be and why?
Twilight… Our fans have branded us as ‘Twilightcore’, sadly we were just 15 years too late to be part of that incredible soundtrack!
Do you have a favorite lyric on the album - if so, which one and why?
‘Poet’s will only say, let go of those rose bouquets, they don’t serve you anyway’ - It’s a lyric that’s a farewell to the thoughts and feelings from the debut album, learning to let that era go, to move onto the next one.
