Grian Chatten - 'The Score'
Fontaines D.C. frontman Grian Chatten releases his first solo endeavour in romantic and vulnerable track ‘The Score’.
The debut single is described by Chatten as ‘a heavyweight bated breath of lust.’ It opens with a classic Fontaines-style synth beat, before calming down to a beautiful acoustic guitar. The simple sequence loops to draw emphasis to Chatten’s ever-poetic lyricism.
The lyrics may not be as deep as those Fontaines are typically known for, but the fragile and stripped-back nature of this tune really speaks volumes for Chatten as an all-round soloist. It is an exposing expression being in love, but not knowing if it’ll last, with the opening verse stating: ‘I will give you thrills and take your pain’, then the chorus contradicting this: ‘you know the score / it ain’t limited to your knowing looks and touches anymore.’
The video, directed by Georgie Jesson, also released April 25th, reiterates the dream-like loving state of the song; being set in a funfair with blurry vision, slow-motion effects and overexposed neon lighting. Chatten also explained ‘it was inspired by sugar and sunset.’ The pretty guitar chords and velvety vocals, especially in the pre-chorus vocal layering, makes for a very smooth romantic record. A gentle electronic synth is laced into the beat halfway through, making the track slightly more upbeat as it draws out. It definitely feels like summer.
It is unknown if this track will come from an EP or album, but this first taste of Chatten as a solo artist definitely will have fans hungry for more."
