Introducing #262 - Being Dead

Let us introduce you to rising garage-jazz-rock three piece Being Dead - who have just announced their debut album and released their latest single ‘Muriel’s Big Day Off’.

On “Muriel’s Big Day Off,” Gumball’s garage punk monotone delivery and Falcon B*tch’s tuneful tenor volley back and forth in what sounds like the theme song for some Adult Swim cartoon that comes on at 1AM. It also showcases Being Dead’s creative process, where instincts and gut reactions are favored over second-guessing or laborious technicalities. “Muriel’s Big Day Off” tells of the titular Muriel and her best friend Friedrick, who spend their day doing exactly what they want: stomping around town, drinking tea, and shoplifting. Inspired by Falcon B*tch and Gumball’s acid trip in which — after drinking wine on their porch and “having a really nice time with a tree” — they returned home, enamored with the patterns of their fingers on the guitar, rather than the way the chords actually sounded.

They took a moment to talk to us about their music.

Hey there Being Dead - how are you? So your track ‘Muriel’s Big Day Off’ is out now - can you tell us what it is about?
It’s about three strangers that come from very different backgrounds who are thrust into a stressful situation and find that teamwork is the only way to overcome the evil ruler, Zobarth, who has caged them in a maze of entrapment and nightmares. Muriel is a shy nine-year-old girl of a lower-middle-class upbringing who finds that her struggles have made her stronger. While this track lays the groundwork for the greater narrative of the album, it zeros in on the titular character’s clash with the powerful and ever-present Zobarth. Drama! (we honestly are so scared of this dude). So, it’s really about exploring new worlds with friends and saying FUCK-IT to the Zobarth in your life. Zobarth works through nightmares because that's his thing.

Where are you from and what are your favourite things to do there?
We have both successfully managed to eliminate all memories prior to our first meeting. This practice keeps us pure and sacred. Together, we reside in a pearl room and listen solely to noise music cranked at full blast 24 hours a day praise god amen. Our favorite thing to do is listen to industrial noise and hyper-pink noise pop while spit-polishing our immense collection of vintage marbles and filing our teeth to tiny points.

What are the key influences when it comes to your music?
As far as industrial noise goes, our most influential artists are: Deerhoof, Cindy Lee, Grass Widow, The Beatles, Beach Boys, Velvet Underground, Devo, Animal Collective & The Kinks

How would you describe your sound to someone who has never listened to your music before?
Like being thrust into a stressful living situation where teamwork is really the only way out... Could be a nightmare or the best dream you’ve ever had. You tell us.

Now the track is out there - what next for you?
THE NEXT SONG >>> Daydream out on May 16! THEN the album drops July 14th (on Bayonet Records) And THEN of course, we will be sailing towards world domination!
