Holy Wave ft. Lorelle Meets The Obsolete - 'The Darkest Timeline'

Holy Wave have released their latest shoegazey single,‘The Darkest Timeline’ featuring psychedelic rockers Lorelle Meets The Obsolete.

Despite ‘The Darkest Timeline’ being Holy Wave’s first attempt at writing a collaborative song, it is a resounding success. Their cohesive dreamy style is only bolstered by venturing into fellow musicians Lorelle Meets The Obsolete's steely sound.

In the track, Holy Wave’s signature intoxicating instrumentation diverges from their sun-baked repertoire, into an altogether heavier, grungier sound – contrasting with their earlier work, such as ‘Do You Feel It’. However, they manage to simultaneously retain their tripped out sound while drawing from the trippy rock tendencies of their collaborators.

The feather-light vocals from psych-rockers Lorelle Meets The Obsolete gels seamlessly with Holy Wave’s recognisably hazy, swirling instrumentation. The layers build and build, while the thrumming drumbeat heightens Lorelle’s ethereal singing. The track is reminiscent of chiaroscuro, the complementing lightness of the vocal set against the deep, inky guitar riffs, creates vivid intensity.

‘The Darkest Timeline’ is the final offering from upcoming full length album, Five of Cups. The new album is named for the tarot card which is generally understood to represent feeling stuck in the past, and unable to focus on the present.

It was this card in particular that struck a chord with band member Ryan Fuson during the height of the pandemic, he explains: “I was really sure that the music world was finished and it seemed like… aggression in general was at an all-time high, so I was ready to stop playing music…“It could be so easy to become jaded and pessimistic and I had to really decide what perspective I was going to take.”

Instead of wallowing in misery, the band pushed on. Taking their shared experiences of hardship and refracting them into beautifully otherworldly songs, with kaleidoscopic results.

Five of Cups is set to be released this Friday via Suicide Squeeze Records. Alongside the tour, the band have announced a slew of tour dates across the UK and Europe this winter.
