Georgia Gets By - 'Happiness is An 8-Ball'

“Happiness Is An 8-Ball” sings Georgia Gets By, the new solo venture by BROODS member Georgia Notts.

With her novel musical identity, Notts shakes the magic ball and with it shakes up our expectations of the musician. In this current evolution the artist not only introduces the audience to a sonic shift but invites them into her innermost workings.

Speaking on her solo project, Notts says “After years working collaboratively as BROODS, I wanted to start a project that could be wholly about my experiences.” Her releases under moniker Georgia Gets By are certainly intimate; first release ‘Easier To Run’ sees Notts grapple with feeling avoidant in a relationship. Following in this vein, ‘Happiness Is an 8-Ball’ sees Notts delve once again into the nuances of struggling relationships. Explaining the meaning behind the track, Notts explains "This song is about using unhealthy coping mechanisms in a desperate attempt to make things work with someone. When love doesn’t bind you anymore and only the pressure to live up to the expectations of a relationship keeps you together, you begin to find yourself turning to other means to find the energy to be with them."

While songs written about relationships and love are as old as time itself, Notts brings a refreshing clarity in her sound. The contrasting crystalline quality of her voice sits above a cacophony of crashing pounding drums and thrumming guitars. The resulting composition encapsulates the turmoil present within deteriorating relationships. Commenting on her process, Notts explains: “I’m always making music to combat, you know, life,” she says. “As I was writing these songs, I was opening old wounds.” It's no wonder then that ‘Happiness Is An 8-Ball’ is a sucker punch of emotion.

‘Happiness is An 8-Ball’ comes from her upcoming debut EP Fish Bird Baby Boy, due 6th October via Luminelle Recordings. With a start as strong as this, it's evident that Georgia Gets By has much more to give, and we will happily receive.
