Introducing #270 - Luce Rushton

Let us introduce you to Luce Rushton, who has just shared her new single ‘Night Drive Through’ via Sad Club Records - an infectious piece of indie pop that explores the mixed feelings of starting a new relationship as a gay woman.

Intimate and evocative, ‘Night Drive Through’ draws on the likes of War on Drugs, Boy Genius and Courtney Barnett to create a sublime piece of late-night bedroom rock which oozes confusion and joy in equal measure.’Night Drive Through’ is about the paranoia I felt in a new relationship thinking of all the ways it could end” Luce Explains. “Being gay, I never thought I would ever find love and so when I did I was convinced at first it was someone playing a prank on me. Although a love song, I wanted this song to

show how every event was clouded by fear. I tried to write a happy song about love, s it begins as a classic pining love song but then it just descends into this panic about death and separation creeping closer as the song continues.

She took a moment to talk to us about her music.

Hey there Luce Ruston - how are you? So your track ‘Night Drive Through’ is out now - can you tell us what it is about?
Night Drive Through is my attempt at writing a happy song that ended up being all about the paranoia I felt in a new relationship thinking of all the ways it could end. It was supposed to be a love song but I started writing about how every event was clouded by fear and as the song continues it just descends into this panic about death and separation creeping closer.

Where are you from and what are your favourite things to do there?
I am from Haslingden which is a town in Lancashire and I love going to Cissy Green’s pie shop and walking round the hills and reservoirs.

What are the key influences when it comes to your music?
The first music I was ever into was 50s and 60s doo-wop music thanks to my nana which I think still influences the way I sing. Lyrically some of my biggest influences are Adrianne Lenker, Cate Le Bon and Courtney Barnett.

How would you describe your sound to someone who has never listened to your music before?
Queer sadboy rock

Now the track is out there - what next for you?
There will be more coming in the following months and an exciting announcement coming very soon! There are also more shows outside of London to come.
