junodream - 'The Oranges'

Celestial, excluding grandeur and an exciting hint at whats to come, junodream kick the year off on a high with their new single ‘the oranges’.

The release is the last single ahead of their debut album ‘pools of colour’ that is set to drop at the end of the month and is a tantalising indication of the sound and message the band seek to put out there.

The track, inspired by a recurring dream that singer Ed Vyvyan has, seeks to encapsulate the feeling of escapism and creativity that is at the heart of what the band are all about. A visceral but ultimately uplifting track, he describes ‘the oranges’ as:

“sort of what junodream means to us as a concept. It’s a creative outlet, separate from the stresses of this weird, amazing, terrible world. It’s the moment of uplift in the album, that’s why it comes right at the death”

The track opens and immediately hits you with this overwhelmingly hypnotic ambience. The guitar line which bursts in is a subtle nod to a lot of their influences like Radiohead, Slowdive and Spiritualized but has a really refreshing and unique feel to it. The track is written and produced to be heard in a big space and certainly isn’t one to listen to alone; the musicality brings with it a wonderfully larger than life presence that you know will translate brilliantly on stage with bold lights. The opening lyrics ‘Step Inside My World’ lay out plain and simple exactly the band’s message: you are here for an adventure.

Everything about the track speaks to the immersive quality they want to emulate for the album; through the enveloping psychedelic melodies and the thoughtful lyricism, they invite you to go on this weird but wonderful journey. It makes total sense that this is the culminating track in their long awaited debut and really solidifies the band’s dedication to not just making great music but creating a whole world that can be enjoyed by fans. It seems so funny then that the track was put together in a remote and tucked away studio in Kinross, Scotland. Evidently, the lads have spent a significant amount of time thinking on and carving out their sound and this track is a testament to the abstract yet nostalgic beauty of their work.

Its a super exciting time for the band, not just because of the forthcoming release but also because of their recently announced UK headline tour that gets going next month. Several iconic venues are on the destination list including Glasgow’s King Tuts, Manchester’s Deaf Institute and the Village Underground in London but tickets are already going fast. Their live shows promise to be the perfect introduction to the band and their debut album meaning that even after its release on the 26th, they will be able to continue to share their message and music with the world.
