Bilk - 'Summer Days'
Rock ‘n’ rollers Bilk expose their tender, romantic side with new single 'Summer Days'.
Bilk is an indie rock trio from Essex consisting of Sol Abrahams on vocals and guitar, Luke Hare on bass and Harry Gray on drums. The authenticity of their lyrics mixed with their ability to write catchy hooks as well as their infectious self-confidence have earned Bilk their big breakthrough moment this year, what with them planning a major headline tour across the UK and Europe in anticipation of their second album. This includes a London show at the Electric Ballroom, their biggest London show to date. Their rise certainly was a gradual one rather than an overnight success, seeing as they debuted in 2018 with their first single ‘Give Up’. Their self-titled debut album which came out in 2023 earned Bilk praise from Louder Than War, who have said that Sol’s ability to write a memorable hook is so extraordinary that “once it gets in your head, it’s practically impossible to get it out again”. As of right now they have released 4 singles from their upcoming album, all of which are brimming with youthful energy with occasional tinges of melancholic reflection.
Written by frontman Sol Abrahams, ‘Summer Days’ is a song that talks about falling in love with someone during the summer. The song is said to be inspired by Sol’s girlfriend, and serves as a refreshing sound for the band seeing as Sol has never written love songs before. The song has a very raw and authentic quality to it, with lyrics such as “and so we went out driving in her car until the night was young, we’d play her Smiths CD and spend the summer days having fun” that represent the sweet naivety of falling in love with someone and being in the “honeymoon phase” with that person. The music video that accompanies the track has a very cosy feel to it, featuring a collection of candid moments of Sol and his girlfriend that they’ve shared together on an outing in Brighton.
Their indie-rock sound with occasional punk and rap influences serves as a refreshing new sound for the modern music scene and leaves me eager to see what else this emerging British band has in store for their sophomore album.
