Cola - 'Bitter Melon'
The prolific Montreal post-punk trio are back with a vibrant six-minute track.
Consisting of two former members of Ought and Toronto-based drummer Evan Cartwright, Cola have released some of the most exciting post-punk music of the last three years, their debut album Deep in View being highly valued by critics and fans alike.
“Bitter Melon” is their first release in close to a year, and consists of the melodic, masterful songwriting that has earned them their high praise in the business of rock music.
The song kicks off with a beautiful revolving bass arpeggio, working its way around the crisp linear drumming, and gently softened with some subtle layers of guitar strumming.
The lyrics are as thoughtful and intriguing as ever, written as a piece of fiction about a person up at night studying “the gloss”, the additional comments written in the margin of a book.
The pre-chorus kicks in a more intense tone as a whole as the rhythm section ushers in a vigorous guitar riff which breaks up the initial lighter groove, a lively spark that Cola has become familiar with in their songwriting.
The subtle layers of complexity in each of the instruments would easily make one believe there are much more than three members, however it is this intricate and thoughtful attention to detail of each part which makes Cola one of the most delightful experiences of recorded music right now.
As of yet no UK tour dates have been announced, but keep your eyes(and ears) peeled as this is one joyful act who will most definitely be making a lot of noise this year.
