Fräulein - ‘Pruning’
The softly thumping, intriguing and almost dreamy rock sound of ‘Pruning’ echoes through our speakers and introduces us to Irish/ Dutch duo Fräulein. We are quite instantly enchanted.
The slow build up of single ‘Pruning’ is what makes it an engaging and exciting listen. Building on a grand and distorted soundscape and powerful, passionate, and razor sharp vocals, the track is a perfect introduction to the grand rock sound the two-piece have created and perfected. The single comes with the announcement of a London album release show in June and comes with a greatly animated video. ’Pruning’ will appear on upcoming mini-LP ‘Sink Or Swim’ which will be out on Submarine Cat Records.
‘Pruning’ showcases everything the duo stand for and aim to broadcast, with its power and sonically elaborate up-and-down delivery. “‘Pruning’ imagines what happens after the good guys win and the ‘happily ever after’ starts” explains vocalist and guitarist Joni. “Will this happily ever after last forever? Will the sacrifices you made along the way be worth it, and do they affect you in the long run?”
Asking these existential questions gives its sound a yearning for answers, a longing to know. At the same time this yearning makes us long for more of its powerful chords and enchanting compositions, progressions that surprise are what keep this an interesting listen from the beginning until the end. The mini-LP that is due to follow this single connects the duo to their primal origins while also displaying new levels of sophistication.
This perfected and well-produced sound comes from a duo that have been growing, exploring, and progressing since their uprising and is ready to give into the waves that are due to follow such talent. Determination clearly makes for a strong rock sound. On their growth, Joni said: “I reject the belief that an artist should arrive fully-formed, I love when you can see artists’ growth, their progression. I want to always be getting better at playing music, at expressing emotion. This new record, ‘Sink Or Swim’, is the first time we’ve really translated what we can do live to the recording studio.”
