Eden Rain - 'Great Nothing'

Compelling and heartfelt, Eden Rain’s latest single ‘Great Nothing’ is a continuation of the deeply relatable and emotive song-writing that we have come to love from the artist.

In her latest release, Eden Rain laments on the breaking down of a friendship and brings to light the words she was never able to say. Lyricism built from the unspoken feelings linger between people who once were friends, this track is as poignant as it is universal. Rain perfectly captures the all-too-familiar sense of uncertainty and loss we all feel when navigating through breakups and conflicts, all while crafting a distinctive sound that is uniquely hers. As she has done with each of her releases, she displays a depth and sophistication beyond her years and her evolution as an artist shines through her writing.

Wanting to remain true to her experiences, Eden Rain was very specific when it came to the inspirations and intentions behind the track. She explained her motivations for ‘Great Nothing’ simplyas :

“It’s like the opposite of a great love, it's the mourning of the potential of a relationship and the confusion and the angst to put everything back where it was..  and all the sinking feelings that come with it.”

It was important for her and collaborator James Conway-Ellis to tell her story in as authentic a way as possible, something Eden Rain herself commented on being particularly difficult. This was a situation she had never really seen or heard of before, so much so she had to invent new language in order to navigate and discern through the ‘frienduashionship’ she faced. The songwriting process was incredibly cathartic and therapeutic for her, an opportunity to channel the frustrations and heartaches she had felt and use them to find resolution in ‘Great Nothing’. The melancholic yet incredibly powerful track that we can listen to today is a testament to her ability to take the weird, messy and tangly and turn it into something beautiful.

The smokiness and richness of her tone coupled against the instrumentation and phrasing wonderfully tackles the quiet mourning of potential, unearthing her own insecurities and regrets with how the events unfolded. Confessional and vulnerable, the hushed piano melody echoes the unease she feels all while acknowledging her part in the situation she finds herself in. As the song moves forward, she is joined by strings, basslines and more percussion which build her back up again both in terms of musicality but also as a reflection of the way she found strength to persevere through things.

Going from strength to strength, passion and a commitment to speaking her truth lies at the heart of everything Eden Rain does. It is no wonder her work is resonating with so many and to date has amassed more than half a million spotify streams. She has announced a string of gigs this month in London, Liverpool and Bristol and has hinted at more music to come before the year is out.
