Sophie May - 'Brian Cox'

Featuring the man himself, Sophie May shoots for the stars with her latest release, ‘Brian Cox’.

Sophie May this week has shared her newest single ‘Brian Cox’, which naturally features its namesake, and together they ponder the universe and the foreboding weight of the infinite cosmos. The track comes out ahead of her new EP ‘Deep Sea Creatures’ which will be released July 26th and brings with it an exciting announcement of a headline show at London Camden Assembly also in July.

The EP boasts 5 tracks, all of which seek to question and unpick existence. Some, like ‘Brian Cox’ explore vast subjects like space, black holes and the incomprehensible size of our universe and others are more introspective, looking at the idea of being trapped by your own thoughts. With this collection, Sophie May’s goal is to be truthful to herself by diving headfirst  into the biggest things in her life; her loves, her hopes and her fears. Kicking things off on a high, this track is very existential in nature. Inspired after listening to the world renowned physicist, May got to thinking about life and its complexities. Its something born out of both her awe and fear of everything out there and her realisation that there is just so much we don’t know. In her own words, she explained:

‘I felt both awe inspired and completely terrified…Amazingly through creating this track I somehow managed to get the chance to meet him…Getting to meet him and incorporate his voice into the track felt like an incredible full circle moment where (no pun intended) the stars had aligned’

The existential and grandiose concepts she discusses are all-too-fitting for May who already this year has surpassed some of her wildest possible dreams. Her track ‘No More Birthdays’ which came out earlier this year and was originally written for the Chicken Run sequel has gained a blistering 2 million streams on Spotify and double that on TikTok. Needless to say, this track is a continuation of great things for the young up and coming artist. As well as a headline show at the Camden Assembly, Sophie May also was excited to announce a support slot alongside Searows that's set to start later this year meaning there’s plenty of opportunity to hear this song and the rest of the EP live. It would seem that in looking to the stars, she is destined to become one herself.
