Fontaines D.C. - 'Favourite'
Taking to the illustrious streets of Spain’s capital, Irish indie darlings Fontaines D.C. are doting on all their “Favourite” things in their latest single.
Their career thus far has been nothing short of impressive: Grammy nominations, tour support slots (IDLES), published poetry collections, and festival appearances, Fontaines D.C. quickly established themselves as one of the best post-punk outfits to emerge out of the mid 2010’s. Composed of Grian Chatten (vocals), Carlos O’Connell (guitar), Conor Curley (guitar), Conor Deegan (bass), and Tom Coll (drums), the band are back with their first full-length project since 2022’s critically acclaimed “Skinty Fia”.
Reflecting on nostalgia and the quick pace of change (“Every time you blink, you feel it change”), frontman Chatten comments on gentrification (“Cities on return are often strange?”), the treatment of the working class (“When they painted town with Thatcher”) on the sophomore track to be taken from their upcoming record “ROMANCE” (XL Recordings). Following on from the ferocious and intense “Starburster”, “Favourite” is a dystopian twist on breezy soundscapes that hails back to tracks such as “I Love You” and “Roy’s Tune”.
The accompanying visuals, as Chatten notes, are “…a reminiscing of the past; of each other’s childhoods we didn’t know”. Self-directed in the most authentic VHS-shot ‘home-video’, the band explore guitarist Carlos O’Connell’s birthplace, from the most popular haunts of the city to quiet backstreets and bustling parks.
From both singles released thus far, “ROMANCE” is set to be the quintet’s more mature, explorative and sonically impressive project to date.
Fontaines D.C.’s fourth record is slated for release August 23rd, supported by a largely sold-out headline tour later this winter (with support from DIIV and Sorry).
