Mini Skirt - 'Squeeze Down'

Mini Skirt pack a punk punch with raw new single ‘Squeeze Down’.

With its gritty, jagged guitar and Idles-esque venomous vocal delivery, new single ‘Squeeze Down’ from Mini Skirt is a raw, three and a half minutes of pure punk edged anarchic energy. Hailing from Byron Bay, they are purveyors of the Aussie pub-punk tradition, their rough around the edges style channelling an infectious spirit that no doubt thrives on the live stage. The single sets the tone for the no nonsense visceral feel of their upcoming second album ‘All That We Know’ set for release on 14th November via UK label Bad Vibrations.

Alluding to working class frustration, ‘Squeeze Down’ channels the angst of the daily grind. The track has a palpable sense of tension, claustrophobia and a deep sense of frustration and disillusionment with the brutal modern world. A strong feeling of being suffocated by the relentless pressures and stresses of the modern world. The title of the song itself suggests a sense of compression; being forced into a smaller version of yourself in order to satisfy perceived social norms. Distorted guitars and anguished vocals reflect the sentiment of anger that drives the anger the track stems from.

As described in the band’s press, Mini Skirt: ‘Things aren’t always picturesque and idyllic: the vocals are urgent and frustrated while the music has a rawness and melody, sonically painting a picture of hope through the struggle. In an interview with Fuzz Club, lead singer Jacob Boylan eloquently describes the essence of the single: ‘The lyrics are about the unshakeable sense I had of feeling isolated, misunderstood and defensive about my identity. It was the first time I realised who I am is so deeply rooted in where I am from’.

An ode to the working class struggle, ‘Squeeze Down’ will undoubtedly strike a chord with many who can relate to overcoming adversity. In keeping with the band’s ethos, this track paints a picture of suburban Australia, characterised by pubs, mundane job sites and run down streets that epitomises a world both reassuringly familiar yet utterly soul destroying. Mini Skirt are sure to set the punk scene alright if ‘Squeeze Down is anything to go by.
