Foo Fighters - 'Asking For A Friend'
Back with a bang! Foo Fighters shock the world yet again with another rhythmic masterpiece.
The all fathers of modern rock descended upon the earth once again last week to blindside us with not only a new song but an all new North American tour with old comrades Queens Of The Stone Age. this gracious return to the world stage instils a great sense of hope in foo's fans around the globe as we know for certian now, the kings are back. Thankfully, this band is one that never runs out of revolutionary ideas. Foo Fighters have managed to reinvent their soundscapes time and again, blending the raw and animalistic tones of days past with new, concise yet still sonically erratic riffs, all from a large group of musicians who all belong in their respective hall of fames. “Asking For A Friend” is a perfect reintroduction to the fray that is 2025’s new releases and solidly grounds itself, sword in hand, gunning for a top spot.
Foo Fighters are monumental, and by this point a household name. This stardom and consistency of brilliance has allowed them to create buzz without the use of a PR machine behind them, releasing the song with little to no announcement or push and just letting the track do the promotion all on its own. This works in just about every way they could have wanted it to. “Asking For A Friend” begins with a swell of instruments that feels straight out of the end of a Transformers film; this epic and mountainous feeling lays way to the mastery that we’ve become well accustomed to as an audience now, biting straight into a blast of filthy and overdriven power chords, played in familiar heavy-handed fashion. This carries straight through the chorus and successfully creates that familiar, euphoric sense of power that comes along with listening to new age gods creating yet another 4-minute masterpiece. This all culminates in a riff emboldened with passion and aggression, the guitars lay waste to the surrounding area through gorgeous intermittent chords as band newcomer Iian Rubin of Nine Inch Nails pounds away at the kit to create a chopping and destructive group of fills that will not leave your head for hours upon hearing them.
This blend of musicianship is to be expected from the band by now and it’s nice that this level of professionalism has not interfered with the personal relationship that these songs share with fans as Ghrol has spoken at length about what this song means to him and the band as a whole, stating "Since our return to the stage in San Luis Obispo five weeks ago, we have been reminded of why we love and are forever devoted to doing this Foo Fighters thing. From reuniting as a band and staring at a list of 30 years worth of songs to brush off, to reimagining versions with the incredible blessing of the one and only Ilan Rubin behind the drums, to reconnecting with our amazing fans and blasting them with everything we’ve got (no matter the size of the venue) because we would not be here without them, we have the most solid core. And the sun is finally rising over the horizon.” Dave also reinforced the importance of the band around him, proving that Foo Fighters are a well-oiled machine and not one man in the drivers seat, saying that, “none of this would be complete without new music to share from Pat, Nate, Chris, Rami, Ilan and I. ‘Asking for a Friend’ is a song for those who have waited patiently in the cold, relying on hope and faith for their horizon to appear. Searching for ‘proof’ when hanging by a wish until the sun shines again. Ghrol then teased the world with the short and sweet statement “One of many songs to come…”. Stirring excitement and adding fuel to the fire for the upcoming horizons of the Foo’s as they look to take the stage again next year. So, if I have any advice for North America, practice moshing in your room now, as those 3-hour shows are no joke.
