Band Of The Week #301 - 100%WET
This week's Band of the Week is Copenhagen duo 100%WET - who have just released their self-titled debut album via Crunchy Frog Records.
100%WET is made up of producer/guitarists Casper Munns and Jakob Birch. Formed in 2023, bonding at the Rhythmic Music Conservatory in Copenhagen over a shared desire to merge breakbeat, acid house, and drum’n’bass with dense, guitar-driven song writing. Their debut album reflects that vision fully: maximalist, emotionally charged, and sonically restless.
They took a moment to talk to us about how the album came together.
Hey there 100%Wet, how are you? So your album is out now – how does it feel to have it out there?.
Feels really great to be able to share the work with the public or just dedicated listeners, and to get it out of the studio into the real world. We're doing pretty good thanks - spending most of our time playing or preparing for shows and working on new material.
Where was it recorded? Any behind the scenes stories you are willing to share with us?
The recording of the album is kinda fragmentented - a lot of it was recorded in a studio/rehearsal space in Nørrebro in Copenhagen, but many of the production ideas started at home on a labtop late at night. Some of the songs were recorded at RMC - especially a lot of the vocals. We often send ideas like beats or early sketches back and forth and work in parallel making new versions of each other's ideas on our computers. But a lot of magic also happened when we were in the room together and just going with each other’s ideas - whether it’s adding glockenspiel, bellafon, samples of cheering children - or making radical tempo changes and switching from drum’n’bass rhythms to distorted rock drums.
Oftentimes vocals came in quite late in the process when we already had a pretty good idea of the track. We’ve been writing and recording with Amalie Petri and Sanna Heinstedt who’ve been our main collaborators and who both have contributed so much to the overall sound with a lot of the melodic and lyrical ideas.
What are the key influences behind the album?
When we started out making music together, we wanted to explore a mix of genres and workmodes and we played a lot with the term “drum’n’gaze”. We’d both listened a lot to Primal Scream’s Screamadelica, everything My Bloody Valentine and stuff like Bowery Electric. We were also excited about more contemporary electronic artists like George Clanton, Onoethrix Point Never and Tokyopill. Earlier influences could be classics like Slowdive, Sonic Youth, Nirvana and britpop bands like Oasis or Happy Mondays.
If the album could be a soundtrack to any film – which one and why?
Maybe if Fight Club was an animation by Studio Ghibli, and all the characters were talking dogs - that would be the one.
Do you have a favourite lyric on the album? If so, which one and why?
Two Packs of Red Apples has a really liberating spirit to it, and also a touch of nostalgia. Sanna Heinstedt wrote the lyrics for this one, and it completely transformed the track. It’s feels a bit like a hidden gem on the album, and it has sort of a different, perhaps more intimate sound for us, than most of the other tracks on the record.
Now the album is out there – what next for you?
We’re currently working a lot in the studio on new songs for the upcoming album. We’re also playing a handful of festivals around Denmark this summer, and will be playing a few DK headliner shows in the fall. Also we’re planning to play shows in the UK and Berlin in the fall, and are looking forward to playing more outside of Denmark.
Casper is preparing for his upcoming Bachelor concert in June at RMC (Rhythmic Music Conservatory Copenhagen) where we’ll premiere all new material. We’ll experiment with an immersive sound system both for this show and our concert in Vega’s Ideal Bar november 1st, while also adding new members to the live setup.
We’re just trying to experiment with new versions of our sound and working modes, both in the studio and on stage.
