EP Review: Willie J Healey – 'Hello Good Morning'
A timeless sound that keeps you guessing.
Willie J Healey is very much one of those musicians who works by his own rules and will not let anything come between him and his creative integrity. For some, this doesn’t work, but Healey has absolutely nailed it with his EP Hello Good Morning.
On the face of it, Hello Good Morning has a rootsy Americana feel to it, which is strange considering the fact that Healey is from Oxfordshire. Lead single and opener ‘Songs for Joanna’ is the most straight forward rock n’ roll song on the EP. A tale of teenage love and the “confusion and all these emotions” to a musical backdrop akin to Lou Reed and The Velvet Underground. ‘Polyphonic Love’, inspired by John Lennon’s ‘Gimme Some Truth’, is a moody blues number. However, the second half of the EP is where it gets interesting and becomes a little bit more difficult for us writers to pigeonhole. ‘For You’ is a slow almost psychedelic jam similar to Tame Impala, whilst ‘Thousand Reasons’ is beautiful ballad with an inspired orchestra middle.
The amazing thing about Hello Good Morning is that the EP sounds like it could have been released back in the 70s or in 10 years time. Willie J Healey has a timeless sound that will appeal to everyone.
