EP Review: goldenbloom – 'Life'
A new band for the AF Gang.
Despite having only formed in May this year, goldenbloom have already made a great debut EP in Life. If you’re a fan of IDLES and an AF Ganger, this may be the next band to sink your teeth into. From the vocals to the riffs and drum beats, goldenbloom are like IDLES younger cousins. But they have their own sound and opt for guitar solos and more intricacy than IDLES’ own brash attack.
‘Life’ is a fantastic opener built around a great riff and exciting energy. The lyrics are funny as goldenbloom take the piss in the reality of modern life: “Go have some children they said/I’d sooner put a noose around my fucking neck/Let’s all go out for Sunday lunch/A paralytic bottomless brunch/That’s life”. ‘Love’ is like part two of IDLES’ ‘Love Song’ and the vocals dip and bark wonderfully, whilst final track ‘Boots’ is reminiscent of Gang of Four in some respects in the drum beat and guitar work. A fine debut for a band still in its infancy.
