EP Review: Delaire The Liar - 'EAT YOUR OWN'

Hailed as their “worst kept secret”, London outfit Delaire The Liar stormed onto the scene hungrier than ever before with EAT YOUR OWN.

The follow-up EP from their 2018 debut Not Punk Enough, EAT YOUR OWN is the complete punk rock product of the band’s efforts throughout 2021. From the first single’s release in the summer, the power-pop-soundtracked hype has only been building higher and higher, stronger and stronger, and this six-track epic is the payoff for that patience getting through another troublesome year for music.

Riding the wave of power-pop and modern punk styles, Delaire The Liar are keeping things fresh and thrilling. With introducing tracks ‘NO ENTRY’ and ‘FURNACE’, it brings the listener in for an adventure. A travel through beats both dance and mosh-worthy, downright contagious riffs, and the sharp-as-lightning vocals that drive the melody home.

‘HALLOWEEN’ is the standout track of the EP, as it holds that set standard for Delaire The Liar and what they are pushing out through the airways. Presented back in July as the first single for EAT YOUR OWN, it’s one of the strongest, loudest and most emotional tracks and will be a memorable one for its release introducing this new era for the band, as well as for being that one special track that everyone will know and love and relate to. That being said, it also holds a different gravity as it contrasts with its successor on the EP, ‘NO ACCIDENT’; a slower, quieter song with a kicked-up bridge and no other dramatics in similar ways to other tracks surrounding it. Putting a storm next to a waterfall is something of beauty, and a balance that can work well with an album or EP track listing, and Delaire the Liar have managed to pull that off with only two EPs. Impressive initiative taken on art, and a step upwards for a band still in their early steps.

With more experience and time to focus on creating music and art in their own way due to the global pandemic, British punk is changing and evolving with every person in that space who is doing their bit to save their scene. Delaire The Liar are just one act of many, but EAT YOUR OWN is just one release this year that is proof that isolation and distancing doesn’t have to stop you and will never stop you.

Fill up on a healthy portion of punk with EAT YOUR OWN, and get ready for an energised 2022.
