Arctic Monkeys - 'There’d Better Be A Mirrorball’

After a long awaited arrival, indie legends Arctic Monkeys return with their newest single ‘There’d Better Be A Mirrorball’.

Arctic Monkeys have finally released new music with this brand new dreamy tune off their upcoming album ‘The Car’ set to be released October 21st. ‘There’d Better Be A Mirrorball’ sticks to the theme of the bands last album ‘Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino’ released in 2018, when they switched up their sound, moving on from songs about queuing up outside nightclubs and hailing black cabs - to more concept songs about being a hotel lounge singer and watching sci fi movies. There is no doubt that the Arctic Monkeys' music has definitely grown up with the band itself, opting for more melodically relaxed songs and slightly confusing yet charming lyrics, with this new single following suit.

The single is incredibly ambitious, with a superb sounding orchestral arrangement and piano opening the song, before pulsing dramatic beats kick in. Front man Alex Turner uses his now more soulful and smooth singing voice to his advantage, with his vocals sounding phenomenal on the single, and matching the tone of the bands new sound impeccably. Turner is heavily influenced by film, even name dropping a few of his favourites on their last album, and even trying his hand at directing for the equally dreamy music video that goes along with the song. Like their previous album, the song sounds like it was written for the medium of film, with sweeping strings that carry the song through that could be used to score a movie.

‘There’d Better Be A Mirrorball’ still holds a science fiction-esque vibe to it that was explored in ‘Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino’, with echoey vocals and slightly odd lyrics. It’s truly admirable that despite the bands new sound separating their fanbase with those that find it confusing and pretentious and others unique and interesting, the Arctic Monkeys are committed to their vision and unapologetically continue to make the music they want to make.

After playing Reading & Leeds festival mere days ago, the band are lined up to play more festivals throughout September until the new year, and with ‘The Car’ dropping this October, fans are crossing their fingers that a tour will be announced sooner rather than later. So jump in and don’t forget to fasten your seatbelts, the Arctic Monkeys are going to take us for a spin.
