Tennis - 'Let's Make A Mistake Tonight'
Tennis are forthright and bold on glimmering new single ‘Let’s Make a Mistake Tonight’
Indie-pop duo Tennis are back with an intoxicating new single, the second song they have released from their upcoming album Pollen.
The album was announced in November, and the band released One Night with the Valet, a song under two minutes with stunning vocals and a melodic rhythm. Let’s Make a Mistake Tonight definitely differs in tone and vibe.
Husband and wife Alaina Moore and Patrick Riley formed Tennis 2010, after attending university together. Their debut record Cape Dory arrived in 2011, and Pollen will be their sixth album.
The track opens with Kate Bush-esque synths and drumbeat, with Moore’s glistening vocals adding to the ethereal feel of the song. At times, the song is a little repetitive sonically, but his is not a bad thing. It creates a clear image in your mind of the picture that the duo are painting for us. This is a song that is best listened to on a night drive, windows rolled down, wind whipping at your hair and face. Of the song, Moore says: “Let’s Make a Mistake Tonight is all hubris, attitude and wish fulfilment. I’m turning water into wine. I’m reshaping my reality through projection or denial. While tracking with Patrick, I kept envisioning the same scene: I’m in the passenger’s seat. Patrick drives with one hand on the wheel and one hand on my thigh. This song plays us out.”
It certainly feels like a song that would play someone, or something out.
“Drive west till there’s nothing left/We’re gonna find something better” Moore sings in her arresting voice. The bridge sees the track slowing down and switching up, adding another layer altogether. Then, it quickly picks back up and fades out, leaving the listener with a hazy, dream-like feeling.
Four minutes of shimmering indie-pop, Let’s Make a Mistake Tonight is anything but a mistake.
