Georgia Gets By - 'So Free So Lonely'
Georgia Gets By is here with her new single, “So Free So Lonely,” as part of her upcoming EP, Fish Bird Baby Boy, out on 6th October via Luminelle Records.
Many will know about New Zealand-born Georgia Nott through her alternative music duo BROODS, which found major success in recent years, opening for acts like Taylor Swift and Ellie Goulding. However, she is on her own now, finding her way – or, as Georgia might put it: getting by. Written while living what she described as a ‘nomadic’ lifestyle between Los Angeles, New York, and her home country of New Zealand, Fish Bird Baby Boy is a deeply personal and moving collection of songs. Containing the pieces of her past experiences, she says she was “opening old wounds” while songwriting; this is a vulnerable EP, shedding light on how she has grown past those experiences. Support in the form of words for Fish Bird Baby Boy has come from publications such as Clash, Dork, and The Line of Best Fit.
The inspiration behind the song “So Free So Lonely” came from Georgia reminiscing on time spent in her Brooklyn apartment watching pigeons on the rooftops. “I imagined them to be lonely for some reason, and I wondered whether they watched humans like I watched them, (Chalk Press Agency, 2023)” says Georgia. The picturesque scenery of Big Sur, California featured in her music video with its winding coastline and majestic ocean matches the breathless, ethereal feeling conveyed in “So Free So Lonely.” Clips of Georgia dancing with angel wings and in a flower field are shown. The question in the lyric “Nobody cares but do we really want them to?” asks listeners to contemplate their own relationship with loneliness, as Georgia turns to a slightly philosophical viewpoint. “Saying goodbye/Tears in their eyes” is a line about the sadness associated with being lonely – and even further, depression – when having to say goodbye to loved ones who we will miss. Yet, one is also freed by being alone; a bittersweet situation. I feel that many can relate to this, as loneliness is on the rise, experts say. The harmony of the guitars and strings put together a beautiful sonic landscape as Georgia’s vocals caress the listener. This song is almost a lullaby and an anthem at the same time.
“So Free So Lonely” is a message for those who are at odds with the feeling of freedom that comes with the downside of being alone.
