Big Special - 'TREES'
Punk pair BIG SPECIAL have just shared their new single ‘TREES’ and announced a bunch of 2024 UK headline shows. Their latest is a visceral and powerfully punching punk rock track!
‘TREES’ is dark and driving, fast paced and exciting new track combining spoken vocals with soft and natural sounding vocal harmonies. The track is a thrilling short story about ritual, vocalist Joe Hicklin adds: “The song is about routines and objects we start to depend on to cope with our life and times and the journeys we take to fulfil that dependence.” This driving new release slowly builds towards a crescendo erupting around 2.30 minutes after which it abruptly dies out and makes me instantly press the replay button.
The song comes with a video in which we see the duo perform their new track, staring intensely into my soul while I feel myself bouncing along to the song’s undeniably catchy rhythm. “It’s about how life catches up with you whilst trying to balance those cycles of responsibility and self-gratification.” That steady rhythm is exactly what I feel is chasing me, luckily BIG SPECIAL isn’t trying to make me feel guilty, we all need a piece of cake from time to time! My piece of cake for today is BIG SPECIAL’s ‘TREES’ on repeat while I sit and sip a cup of coffee and feel the adrenaline pumping fueled by the combination of a fast paced punk track, and caffeine.
BIG SPECIAL was born in the belly of the black country and brings a combination of skull-crunching guitars, wobbling synths and face-melting drum rolls. Dark humour combined with honest and heartfelt observations on mental health are what made their debut single ‘SHITHOUSE’. They continued building on the momentum of their debut and have created a sound and name for themselves that make them an exciting band to write about and listen to! The band wishes to explore the bleak and beautiful honesty of a nation in an ever growing state of depression through their personal experiences and they do it well. While working through my own personal struggles, their music offers a welcome distraction and a vibing sound I can easily get lost in!
BIG SPECIAL will soon be embarking on a nearly entirely sold out UK headline tour that sees them performing all over the country. More shows have been announced across April 2024 but as we’ve seen; tickets will soon be flying out the door for those shows as well!
