The Gulps - 'Mirror Mirror'

As they prepare for their tour The Gulps releases new single, ‘Mirror Mirror’ which is like stepping through a hall of infinity mirrors.

Hailing from all corners of Europe and the Middle East; The Gulps consists of frontman Javier Sola, guitarist Juan Carlos Ruiz, bassist Simon Mouchard, rhythm guitarist Francesco Antonio Buffone and drummer Raoul Khayat. The Gulps have previously released 2 singles 2019’s ‘The Kings House’ and the 2022 ‘Candy’ which was released via the own band’s own Guindilla records and this single was featured in ‘Made in Chelsea’. The band have already earnt the support from BBC Radio 6 and Radio X, and high praise from tastemakers such as Clash, NME and Louder than War.

The Gulps’ notorious live shows led them becoming the last singing of the legendary Steve Strange before his death. To X-ray Touring, which is an independent, global music agency which handles the live careers of touring musical acts, which the headline artists include Smashing Pumpkins, Pixies, Queen of the Stone Age and Blur.

The Gulps first single of 2023 being ‘Mirror Mirror’ was premiered by Chris Hawkins on BBC 6 Music, with them announcing that new music will be arriving later in the year. Lead singer Javier explains that they were inspired by Jack Kerouac’s ‘On the Road’, which is carefree and has a sense of adventure. Which makes the listeners feel reflected within the lyrics, looking at the mirror and feeling they’re part of the hedonism of another day.

From this single they kicked off their UK headline tour and ahead of this tour The Gulps released an official video for ‘Mirror Mirror’ and according to director Eilera Ellie, the indie-rock video is like stepping through a hall of infinity mirrors and it explores the diverse shards of human character as many of us have a selection of alter-egos within us and we put acts of our character on show when and where required. Similarly, in the video the scenes flicker between each band member as they are lost within their internal worlds, and it is out for all to see. Every time they are in search of their true self, the two universes merge together. The track itself is similarly changeable as it swings between the slick indie stylistics of The Strokes in one moment to the zaniness of The Lemon Twigs another, all while doggedly throwing-off the straight-jacket of convention at every given opportunity.
