EP Review: Brooke Bentham - 'Caring'
Singer-songwriter, Brooke Bentham, releases her new lyrically poetic EP ‘Caring’. Bentham takes us on a trance-like trip through her new vulnerable indie-rock sound.
Brooke Bentham is a UK-based musician, known for her debut LP ‘Everyday Nothing’ in 2020. Almost three years later, Bentham provides us with a more alternative sound, that evokes a strong sense of hope and comfort in her new EP.
Opening the EP is ‘over and over’, a beautifully written story blended with the upbeat sound of her band's guitars and drums. Bentham communicates her frustration with everyday life and how life doesn’t have to feel this way. ‘over and over’ is a track that illustrates the adventures life has to offer despite the mundane of life. Bentham comments that the track is an “ode to road trips, getting away from life, feeling like yourself, and enjoying being alive”.
The sweetest track of ‘Caring’ has to be ‘almost heaven’. The track captures the wonders of finding love for life through the help of a partner. ‘almost heaven’ is a true reflection of young love. It’s a love song that reassures listeners how we invariably grow with our partners and will always care for the journey they take us on.
‘let go’, the third track on her EP, is a beautifully written track exploring the nostalgia we feel in thinking of past relationships. She creates a safe space for us to feel the regret and loss of something we once held dear. Bentham states that when writing the track she “was really thinking about the way our bodies hold emotion and how it affects us.”
The final track ‘stop’, is the more angsty song of the bunch. If we think of Pheobe Bridgers’ track ‘Punisher’, Bentham emulates the gut-wrenching high notes of that track in order to fully showcase her anger.
Brooke Bentham is one to keep your eye on, especially for lovers of Pheobe Bridgers and Lucy Dacus.
