Billie Marten - 'I Can't Get My Head Around You'

‘I Can't Get My Head Around You’: the blissful new track from Billie Marten ahead of her fastly-approaching upcoming album.

The sweet, acoustic-led song released on Monday is part of her upcoming album ‘Drop Cherries’ released on 7 April, via Fiction Records. Previous singles for the album ‘This Is How We Move’ and ‘Nothing But Mine’ were greatly received by audiences, and supported via radio play from the likes of BBC Radio 1, 6 Music, and BBC Radio 2. The record, written and co-produced by Marten herself alongside Dom Monks, will be her fourth album release to date, and it’s expected to be a definite highlight amongst her discography.

Described as a “cruiser” to play on a long drive, ‘I Can’t Get My Head Around You’ perfectly captures the feeling of arriving home. With its catchy chorus and easy-going verses, the song makes one feel comforted by Marten’s vocals, perfectly aligning with the idea behind the song, described below:

“This is very much a cruiser. One to turn up really loud on the long drive out of town or back home. The sentiment expresses a deep sense of homecoming, arrival at where you'd like to be, and also a slight implausibility of discovering a new era of gladness.”

In late last summer, ‘Drop Cherries’ was produced between Somerset and Wales, recorded entirely on tape. Using this recording technique, Marten emphasized her passion for representing intuition in song-writing, and natural creativity. Marten expresses wanting her new release to feel true to herself and her feelings:

“When I’m trying to write, the creative door is closed most of the time. When it briefly opens, I know I’ve stumbled across moments of true emotion and insight; they give no warning and are often unpredictable. I can’t force the process, something I’m realizing more with each album. And that’s why I know that Drop Cherries is a collection of songs expressing genuine intuitive feeling.”

The title is inspired by a tale Marten heard from a friend, with the metaphor of gifting cherries  alluding to offering someone your love. “Dropping cherries,” Marten states, “is such a strong, visceral image that I tried to channel throughout recording in Somerset and Wales, to capture the vibrancy, unpredictability, and occasional chaos one experiences within a relationship.”

If the album is anything like Marten’s previous releases, which were incredible masterclasses in song-writing and lyricism, then one can expect to be blown away by ‘Drop Cherries’. Alongside the album release, Marten will be completing a headline UK and North American tour in May, including 2 dates at London’s Lafayette on 26 & 27 May.

Tune in to ‘I Can’t Get My Head Around You’ now, and see exactly why Billie Marten is shaping up to be one of the most exciting song-writers of our generation.
