The Drums - 'I Want It All'
The Drums are back, and this time it's personal. ‘I Want It All’ is the first single from their upcoming album.
While founding band member Jonathan Pierce is the last original drummer boy, he retains his place as the beating heart of The Drums. This has resulted in him writing his most personal work to date, his latest single is no exception.
‘I Want It All’ is a touching rumination on his challenging upbringing as a young boy struggling with his sexuality in a small town with two Pentecostal pastors for parents. It’s a far cry from the sunny nonchalance of ‘Let’s Go Surfing’ but means far more than that.
Speaking on The Drums’ latest single Pierce said “It is only in the past few years that I have really begun to understand what happened to me as a boy, which has helped me start to build my own bridge towards real love. The song is a declaration - that I will take what I was never given. I want the full experience of being human, which includes love and connection. I want it all.”
The 5 minute magnum-opus is unflinchingly sincere asking “Was it so hard to be a little kinder?” with the wide-eyed curiosity of a child yearning for love. This is the record that Pierce has always wanted to make, 13 years on from The Drums’ thrilling debut, the enigmatic frontman is no longer hiding who he is and embracing painful home truths like an old friend.
