Dream Wife - 'Who Do You Wanna Be?'
Do you ever feel exhausted by the pressure to feel somewhat empowered it’s only 8AM ? So do Dream Wife on latest single ‘Who Do You Wanna Be?’ A Riot Grrrl explosion that taunts the government and throws the patriarchy onto its knees.
Dream Wife has left us wanting more after their first two albums, this being the first single of their upcoming third album - Social Lubrication. With vibrant energy like Goat Girl, Dream Wife are bringing themselves centre stage. Daring, honest and catchy, you won’t be able to sit still while listening.
Leading with their punky, dirty guitar line that leads us onto the fun madness, the bass chugging away works perfectly alongside the guitar and the driving drums taking the wheel. Rakel Mjöll’s vocals almost giggling in the face of the mainstream consciousness is affirming and reminds me of Pink Floyd’s ‘Another Brick in the Wall’. With the lead vocal line If not you, then who? Who do you wanna be? This makes you question yourself, take a hard look in the mirror, and ask myself the very same question - Who do I want to be?
Dream Wife cut through the static with powerful lyrics ‘the left cuts down the left while the right upholds the crown’, a slap in the face for politics while sending a clear-cut message to everyone. They say what would you do if you were in the situation? This a question you are left to reconcile with after the song is over before putting the track promptly back on again.
The music video looks like it's straight out of a magazine with Blondie styling and a cast of rebels leading the way. The shared looks are fun and makes you want to be a member of Dream Wife in on the inside jokes and throwing paint against a wall or screaming during a protest that hasn’t happened yet.
Dream Wife is all over the map during this summer festival season and their album Social Lubrication drops on the 9th June. They are performing in their home town Brighton and all over the UK. Definitely a show you do not want to miss!
