Emilia Tarrant - 'Worst Boyfriend Award'

Ahead of her debut album due later this year, Emilia Tarrant offers an exciting introduction to her latest body of work, with unapologetic new single ‘Worst Boyfriend Award’.

Since the release of her debut single ‘If You Want Love’ in 2019, Emilia Tarrant has proven herself as a promising voice in rising female talent. From gaining the backing of BBC Radio 1 to securing a slot at last year’s Glastonbury, the 21-year-old’s impressive musicianship has not gone unnoticed.

Tarrant’s latest EP ‘When It Was Chaotic’ highlighted her potential as a young artist, with the 5-track-long record placing reflective ballads and upbeat pop anthems side by side. Despite the EP only being released in March, Tarrant is already entering a new chapter of her musical journey.

Latest single ‘Worst Boyfriend Award’ continues to showcase the singer-songwriter’s unchallenged musical versatility. With Tarrant’s soulful and ethereal vocals, the track explores themes of moody defiance and female empowerment in recounting a friend’s relationship breakdown. On the inspiration behind the track, Tarrant recalls:

“An amazing friend of mine was in a very up and down time with her partner, and I’m not going to lie, she deserved so much better! Most of us dream of that ‘fairytale’ love, and he really swept her off her feet at the beginning. But his flaws definitely started to show, big time, and the lyrics ‘make plans, no show’ ended up being very real day to day occurrences. Anyway, let’s just say she’s a lot happier now, and he officially got the ‘Worst Boyfriend Award’ from both of us!”

Driving electric beats and echoing harmonies secure the track as a feel-good anthem, in spite of its heartbreaking lyricism. Synth-laden production sees Tarrant experiment with sounds that are different to much of her previous work, including reflective ballad ‘Another Life’ and minimally produced pop track ‘Same For Me’. This new approach certainly pays off, with the track cleverly utilising tension and release to convey the progression of not only the record itself, but also the personal growth it describes.

As the first single from her upcoming album, ‘Worst Boyfriend Award’ establishes Tarrant as yet another notable upcoming female artist within the pop scene. To hear more from Emilia Tarrant, you can catch her at her upcoming headline show set for 29th July at Southampton’s Heartbreaks.
