Being Dead - 'Last Living Buffalo'
Psychedelic post-punk band Being Dead releases their sonic single ‘Last Living Buffalo’ ahead of their forthcoming debut album ‘When Horses Would Run’.
This is a unique tale that narrates the final, solitary moments of a lonely buffalo. The track opens with an ethereal harmony that immediately establishes the unity of this Texas-based trio. The band themselves recall that “Our music is really a slice of our friendship. We've lived together and we're always together and I feel like it's a palpable thing”. This solidity clearly weaves its way into their music through the intertwining vocals and use of hybrid genre.
We then delve into a more fast-paced guitar verse and a rising chorus indebted to Jefferson Airplane’s ‘White Rabbit’, offering a diverse range of musical flavours. The trio breaks away from their unified vocals, spotlighting each member with a call-and-response type verse, and clearly demonstrating their reluctance to conform to the restraints of basic pop format. It is rare that you experience such idiosyncrasy and unparalleled creativity in a band, but Being Dead thoroughly delivers with their abstract lyricism, meticulously layered with lush harmonies.
The final verse is both haunting and cinematic, with a rioting crash of screams and drum symbols. We are left with the immortal words ‘You killed him’, before jumping back to an upbeat guitar riff – a stark and chilling contrast that acts as a montage of torturous emotions.
Being Dead’s latest track ‘Last Living Buffalo’ allows you to uncover hidden nuances with each subsequent listen – it is a true gem in today’s musical landscape that will not appeal to those seeking straightforward pop hooks. Listen to this amongst other tracks on their upcoming album ‘When Horses Would Run’, which is due for release on July 14th.
