SAMPHA - 'SPIRIT 2.0'

After 6 years of radio silence, Sampha returns with his brand-new single ‘Spirit 2.0’ paving the way for his upcoming second album.

Following the global success of his 2017 debut album ‘Process’, Sampha’s intervening years may not have yielded new music but that’s not to say the London singer hasn’t been productive. Collaborations with massive stars like Kendrick Lamar, Stormzy and Frank Ocean have seen the UK producer in demand. Yet his real inspiration for his second record has been sparked by his ‘Satellite Business’ residencies he has played from London to New York. These intimate gigs birthed his latest release, wistful number ‘Spirit 2.0’.

Commenting on the upbeat track, he said “It's about the importance of connection to both myself and others, and the beauty and harsh realities of just existing. It's about acknowledging those moments when you need help - that requires real strength. Over snare drums and polyrhythmic synths, he has leapt out of the tall shadows cast by self-doubt and grief that loomed on his first album and has embraced a more positive mantra.

Featuring musical contributions from Yussef Dayes, El Guincho and Owen Pallet alongside vocals from Yaeji and Lisa-Kaindé Diaz of Ibeyi, his new song offers a modern take on West African folk music. Transcending expectation, its multiple layers and textures are evidence of Sampha’s unique talent for crafting atmospheric soundscapes in his music.

Elaborating more on his new song, the Mercury Prize winning artist continued “I hope people can enjoy that feeling of someone being there for you, even if that person doesn't have the answers. Just calling someone up without overthinking... letting go and just dancing.. wanting to see past the mundanity of things and appreciating the magic of it all, from birds nests to spaceships.” A tantalising taste of what’s to come, ‘Spirit 2.0’ is a bold advancement for Sampha’s production and vocal abilities showcasing an experimental side that is ready to be nurtured further.
