EP Review: Chrissy Costanza - ‘VII’

Powerhouse vocalist of the popular alternative band Against The Current, Chrissy Costanza, has taken a bold leap into the solo realm with her debut EP ‘VII’.

With over 3 billion streams to her name,

Chrissy Costanza has built a formidable reputation in the music industry, through her role as vocalist of Against The Current. Yet, it is through her first solo outing ‘VII’ that she truly reveals her artistic evolution, stepping out from the shadows of her band to showcase a more personal and experimental side of her musical identity.

The first single which was released from the EP, ‘7 Minutes In Hell,’ marked a pivotal moment for Costanza. Signifying her entrance into solo artistry, the track balances a heavier sound with deeply introspective lyrics, reminiscent of some of Against The Current’s recent music, as well as Costanza’s feature on the VOILÀ track ‘Caught It.’

Speaking of VOILÀ, the band’s vocalist, Luke Eisner, features on the track, creating a sense that Costanza is easing herself into being a solo musician, supported by a trusted collaborator to help her take the leap. The chorus of this song is both haunting and catchy, standing as a testament to her ability to weave personal narratives into accessible pop hooks, showcasing her songwriting skills in a fresh context.

Following this, the next single, ‘If Looks Could Kill,’ feels like Costanza truly embracing her newfound solo endeavor. This track combines elements of pop-punk with contemporary pop sensibilities, as she channels an assertive and fierce persona, which fans have seen previously in her work with Against The Current. However, despite the sound of the track, there is no rage behind the lyrics; it is, in fact, a reflection on all-consuming love.

In the context of the entire project, these singles are positioned after the EP opener ‘But, What If I Fly,’ a soaring anthem that encapsulates the essence of self-discovery and liberation. This track feels like a defining moment in Costanza’s solo journey, as she questions what will happen if she takes a “blind leap of faith”, which most likely reflects her decision to make the EP in the first place.

Listeners are greeted with a blend of ethereal melodies and robust instrumentation that sets the tone for the track, as Costanza’s vocal prowess shines brightly, delivering poignant lyrics reflecting her aspirations and fears for this new era of her career. This opening track effectively establishes the thematic foundation of the EP that the singles previously hinted at, embodying the mixture of vulnerability and strength that permeates throughout the project.

Elsewhere, the main body of the EP centres around an exploration of past and present relationships, with ‘Pick Your Poison’ telling the story of a breakup which is waiting to happen. Meanwhile, ‘You’d Be Right’ reflects on a relationship that has now ended, as Costanza reveals to her former lover that she has now moved on: “Boohoo, oh no, poor you. I got addicted to someone new.” Straight after, ‘Some Like It Hot’ delves further into this new relationship; as Costanza sings, “I’ve got a side of me that you never met,” it feels like she’s speaking directly to her fans, since she has never opened up so intensely about her personal relationships within the lyrical content of Against The Current songs.

The EP concludes with ‘I Tried To Act Your Age,’ a powerful ballad which continues this theme and serves as the highlight of the entire project. This track delves into the complexities of growing up and navigating relationships, particularly when you find yourself in a situation where you are not yet mature enough for your partner, but you try to become what they expect.

Costanza presents a raw and authentic perspective that resonates with the listener, and this emotional depth of the lyrics, combined with her stunning vocal delivery, leaves a lasting impression long after the EP is over. The imagery created by the song is remarkably vivid, as Costanza’s lasting scars from the experience shine through, despite the time that has passed since the situation she is singing about took place.

‘VII’ marks a significant chapter in Costanza’s career. The EP is a reflection of her journey as an artist, blending elements of pop, rock, and lyrical  introspection to create a cohesive body of work where she is more open and honest than she has ever been before. With its diverse sound and heartfelt lyrics, ‘VII’ will not only satisfies long-time fans but also opens the door for new listeners to experience the depth of her artistry.

And as Costanza prepares to hit the road on her Spin The Bottle tour with VOILÀ, it’s clear that this solo venture is just the beginning of an exciting new era for one of the alt-rock scene’s most talented vocalists.
