Divorce - 'Housewife'
Still riding the high from her previous September single ‘Life Of The Party’, Housewife releases her new track ‘Divorce’ which dives into themes of vulnerability and introspection.
21 year-old Brighid Fry has solidified herself as one of alt-pop’s most exciting upcoming voices in recent years. Exploring points of identity, modern life, and relationships, her musical project under the name of Housewife has drawn connections from all over the world. ‘Divorce’ further cements their reputation in the indie music scene and has fans excited for her forthcoming releases.
Housewife’s latest single is thought-provoking and emotionally charged. It begins deceptively gentle with calm guitar strumming and soft vocals, drawing listeners in with its easily digestible sound. It feels brutally accepting with a twinge of unresolved anger - displayed in the lyrics ‘If I knew you were going to lock me out / I’d have never cut you a key’
Created in light of needing an outlet after a breakup (and written in the space of an impressive half hour), Brighid Fry speaks on what the song means to her, "Divorce is a really personal one for me - I wrote it after experiencing really bad heartbreak that kind of blindsided me and completely uprooted me. It's about not only mourning the person and the relationship you have with them, but also the life you were building together.”
Before the first chorus, ‘Divorce’ sounds as if it’s coming straight from an old radio; its drums dampened and dull, vocals soft and slightly crackled. The production is intimate and suits the single perfectly.
Blooming into a more dynamic rhythm with added layers of instruments, the track develops a warm groove as the chorus hits. It’s one that’s made to be sung in unison by fans at a live show. The drums now appear much sharper, giving a sense of clarity and cleverly mirroring the stages of processing a breakup and moving forward.
Housewife navigates the difficult subject with maturity and brutal honesty which shines throughout the single. Despite a simple range of instruments, the layering of guitar and drums alongside passionate vocals capture the intensity of the emotions at play. Helping to effortlessly build this image of love and loss are the rawness of the lyrics: ‘Why’d you have to give so much / Then up on me? / You did your best to force me out / Then ask me why I leave’
‘Divorce’ has the ability to resonate with fans on multiple levels. Whether you’re drawn to its lyrical depth, carefully crafted instrumentals, or its emotional weight, the song offers something for everyone.
Housewife has once again proved they’re unafraid to tackle difficult topics head-on and flip them into full-volume bedroom-pop anthems. It’s a standout single within the alternative music scene which showcases Brighid Fry’s growth and solidifies Housewife as an artist to watch closely.
