EP Review: The Klittens - 'Butter'
The Klittens, hailing from Amsterdam, have just revealed their latest single, "Reading Material", marking the third catchy track from their forthcoming EP, "Butter", set to release on March 8th. This track follows the infectious "Universal Experience", which gained substantial debut support on both BBC Radio 1 and BBC Radio 6 last autumn, and the off-kilter melodies of the subsequent release, "Atlas".
The latest single was written by guitarist Winnie in a period of extreme illness and fatigue, in which her days would fade into each other. Winnie Conradi says of their latest single: “This song was an attempt to uplift myself and I am happy to say that it did. In these periods of fatigue everything feels shallow - thoughts are short, emotions are stunned. These were the few notes and melodies I could come up with, while hearing the danceable beat that I had set the metronome to.”
Since their emergence, The Klittens have risen from the depths of Amsterdam's vibrant underground scene to grace esteemed stages. Blending the infectiousness of pop with the grit and depth of art-rock and post-punk, they have sculpted a sound that is uniquely and intriguingly their own. While many of their fans currently reside locally, following their first UK headline shows earlier this year and the release of this EP, it's likely they'll quickly amass a broader fanbase here in the UK.
Their upcoming 5-track EP is set to highlight their distinct sound, which is certain to be a favourite for many. It speaks volumes about a band's artistry when they can authentically showcase who they are and their unique sound within just 5 songs.
The EP delves into subjects such as unfulfilled promises, shared experiences in relationships, discovering solace in solitude, and a whole lot of other themes. The EP title seems appropriate to me; each track flows seamlessly, similar to smooth butter, seamlessly blending into the next. Despite its bold expression of themes, the EP avoids an excess of heavy beats and harsh tones. It possesses the kind of vibe that would perfectly compliment the soundtrack of a summer indie film.
Initially a creative and political outlet, the group has evolved into a musical life mission for its members. Their DIY approach, from songwriting to booking shows and tour management, is what make The Klittens the ragtag bunch of misfits they are. The band will return for further UK shows on an all-Dutch line-up with their friends in Personal Trainer and Real Farmer as part of Independent Venue Week.
